✨ How I Edit Headshots for a Natural Yet Polished Look

One of the most common concerns people have before a headshot session is,
“Will the photos still look like me?”

The short answer is: yes — only better lit, better composed, and gently refined.
As a Manchester-based commercial photographer, my editing process is all about balance: making you look professional and confident without losing what makes you, you.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how I edit headshots for a natural yet polished result.

1. ✅ Basic Retouching: Clean, Not Overdone

Once the shoot is complete, I start with light retouching to remove anything that’s temporary or distracting — like:

  • Blemishes or redness

  • Flyaway hairs

  • Dust on clothing or lint

  • Stray threads or minor distractions in the background

I don’t alter facial features, skin texture, or anything that changes your appearance. The goal is to make you look your best on your best day — not someone else entirely.

2. 🎨 Colour Correction & Tone Balancing

Every image goes through a colour grading process to ensure it matches your brand and feels consistent.

That includes:

  • Adjusting white balance so skin tones look natural (not too cool or orange)

  • Enhancing contrast and exposure so your face is well-lit

  • Bringing out the richness in hair, eyes, and clothing without oversaturating

  • Keeping background tones clean and professional

This subtle work is key to making your headshot pop online — whether it's on LinkedIn, your website, or a pitch deck.

3. 🧼 Skin Smoothing — The Right Way

I apply very gentle skin smoothing to reduce shadows under the eyes, soften fine lines, and even out tone. But I’m careful not to remove texture completely — your skin should still look like real skin, just well-rested and well-lit.

Think of it as a great night’s sleep, not an Instagram filter.

4. 💻 Cropping & Output for Multiple Uses

Finally, I deliver your headshots in web ready resolutions, so you're ready for:

  • LinkedIn profile pictures

  • Website team bios

  • Press releases or speaker bios

  • Company directories

  • Print materials

Each crop is framed for maximum impact, ensuring your face is the focus — with space to breathe.

I find most clients are happy with their files being ready to use, but if you need specific file sizes, formats and crops I’m more than happy to help!

📸 Final Result: You, Confident and Professional

A strong headshot should feel like you — just your most confident, camera-ready self.

My editing philosophy is simple: enhance, don’t erase. With expert lighting, natural posing, and subtle retouching, we’ll create images that feel authentic, trustworthy, and ready to represent your personal or company brand.
