The best personal branding photographer is one who starts with what you need your images to do, not with the camera. Look for a portfolio that shows natural, consistent portraits of people in roles like yours, a clear process from briefing to delivery, and the ability to produce a set of images that works across your website, LinkedIn, press and internal communications.
That is the short answer. Here is the longer one, based on years of photographing founders, executives and leadership teams.
1. A portfolio that matches the level you are working at
Browse their work with your own context in mind. Are the subjects people in senior or client-facing roles? Do the images feel considered and confident rather than stiff or over-retouched? Look for range too: some images in the studio, some on location, some in the subject's own working environment.
If every portrait looks the same, ask whether that is a signature style or a single template applied to everyone. Your brand should not look like someone else's.
2. They ask about your goals before they quote
A good photographer will want to know where the images will be used, who needs to respond to them and what impression you want to give. A founder pitching investors needs something different from a managing director fronting a rebrand, or a charity leader preparing for press.
If the first conversation is only about price and date, the images are likely to be generic.
3. Experience directing people who are not models
Most people feel awkward in front of a camera, and that is normal. What matters is whether the photographer can put you at ease quickly and direct you with clear, practical guidance. Ask how they run a session, how long it typically takes, and what they do to help nervous subjects relax. Ask to see unretouched or behind-the-scenes examples if you want evidence.
4. Consistency, especially for teams
If you need images for more than one person, consistency becomes the real test. Can the photographer light, frame and retouch a whole team so the results look like one company, even when people are shot on different days or in different offices? Ask how they manage this, and whether they can return later to photograph new joiners in the same style.
5. Clear process, retouching and licensing
Before you book, you should know:
how the session is planned and what you need to prepare
how many final images you will receive and how long delivery takes ([your typical turnaround])
what level of retouching is included
how the images can be used, for how long and in which channels
Vague answers here cause problems later, particularly if images are used in advertising or by third parties.
6. Can they do more than portraits?
Personal branding rarely stops at a headshot. Consider whether you will want supporting images: your workplace, you in action, your team, an event, a project. A photographer who can handle the whole picture, [from portraits to environmental, architectural and event work], gives you a more coherent visual identity and saves you coordinating several suppliers.
7. Questions to ask before you book
Who have you photographed in similar roles or sectors?
How do you plan a session around how the images will be used?
What is included in the price, and what costs extra?
How do you keep a team or a series of shoots consistent?
What are the licensing terms?
How soon will I see the images?
Frequently asked questions
How much does a personal branding photographer cost? Prices vary with experience, session length, number of final images and licensing. My packages start from £495 and vary depending on the overall brief, you can see more on my rates page.
How long does a personal branding session take? For an individual session typically last around 4 hours, this allows us time for outfit changes and backdrop changes as well as changing location. Teams and multi-location shoots take longer, and I plan them in advance so the day runs smoothly.
Should I choose a local photographer? It helps, particularly for on-location work, but a photographer with a clear process can work in your premises or travel to you. I primarily work in the Greater Manchester area but frequently travel further if the need arises and budget allows.
